Seebäder on Rügen

On Rügen you can still find the typical bathing architecture that characterises places (= seaside resorts) on Germany's Baltic Sea coast. This architecture was shaped particularly in the years from 1793 to 1918 and contains many elements from the Gründerzeit. In order to preserve the charm of the seaside resorts, many of them are still built in the bathing style, so that you can still find many well-preserved bathing villas on Rügen.

Binz

In Binz, the largest seaside resort on the island of Rügen, you will find not only an impressive spa architecture but also the hunting lodge of Garnitz and the famous building complex Prora. Binz is located on the eastern side of the island, next to the narrow heath which connects Binz with the peninsula of Jasmund. The first mention of the fisherman's and farmer's farm was found in 1318 with a tax increase, only centuries later the seaside resort became significantly more important - when guests of the prince to Putbus used the place as a bathing resort. Since 1875, bathing in the sea was finally discovered and so Binz got an enormous upswing in bathing tourism. Finally, in the middle of the 20th century, the KdF seaside resort was built in the Prora district of Binz.

Even today, Binz is still one of the most popular bathing resorts in Germany and promises a unique holiday destination with its typical architecture, the Baltic Sea in front of the door, a modern infrastructure, relaxing wellness facilities and much more.

Seebad Sellin

Below Binz, in south-east direction, is the seaside resort of Sellin, which lies directly on the coastal high forest of the Garnitz and is also the connection to the Mönchgut peninsula. The special thing about the seaside resort of Sellin is that it borders the Baltic Sea on the one hand and the Sellin Lake in the interior of the island on the other.

In addition, Sellin is home to one of the landmarks of the island of Rügen - the Sellin pier. On your way to the Seebrücke you will discover many bathing villas on Wilhelmstraße, which were built by the Prince of Putbus. In 1906, the first Sellin Seebrücke with a length of around 500 metres was built. But due to the weather, especially in winter, the bridge suffered more and more damage. In the 1950s, the bridge house was the island's dance restaurant. Unfortunately, it was closed in 1974 and demolished in the following years and only reopened 20 years later - in the style and splendour of the 20 years that many a resident can remember.

Today there are always different events taking place in the Brückenhaus, there is a restaurant where you can dine above the sea. One of the most romantic places around the island and always a visit worthwhile!

Baabe

The seaside resort of Baabe is located between the seaside resort of Sellin and Göhren. The seaside resort is located directly on the Mönchgraben, a rampart and a ditch that bordered the Mönchgut peninsula in medieval times. The ditch ran 1.5 km long in an almost straight line from the Selliner See to the Baltic Sea. Nowadays there are several legends that explain the bottom of the ditch, but since there have not been any major excavations on the ditch so far, its actual use is unknown. Seebad Göhren

The seaside resort of Göhren is located directly on the Mönchgut peninsula and is therefore the easternmost point of the island of Rügen. Here you will find Cape Nordperd, which belongs to the Mönchgut nature reserve. The promontory runs about 1.5 km into the Baltic Sea, in the form of a triangle, but to maintain this shape it had to be secured with protective measures in order to counteract the weather. To this day, Göhren is still a very popular bathing and holiday resort on the island. Göhren is also a terminal of the Rasender Roland.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the seaside resorts were already connected by a network of narrow-gauge railways, on which the so-called "Rügensche Kleinbahn" operated. Today, the route is crossed by the raging Roland, whose termini are Putbus in the north in the Göhren in the east of the island.

In a historic steam locomotive as a small train you can travel daily between the seaside resorts with a comfortable 30 km/h to and back.

Basically, the raging Roland always drives between 8:00 a. m. and 9:00 p. m. in 2-hour intervals, in the summer months additional journeys are used.
